Direct Express cardholders should keep using the card currently in their possession until it expires, is replaced, or the program sends specific transition instructions. This independent guide is not affiliated with Direct Express, the U.S. Treasury, Fifth Third Bank, Comerica Bank, or a federal benefit agency.
For a lost or damaged card, use the website, app, or customer-service number associated with that card series. Do not open a second Direct Express account or change benefit delivery merely because a replacement is on the way.
What Direct Express is
Direct Express is a prepaid debit card used to receive eligible federal benefits without a traditional bank account. Funds are deposited into the card account on the recipient’s scheduled payment date and can be used for purchases, bills, ATM withdrawals, or cash access at participating banks and credit unions.
The card account is separate from the federal agency’s benefit record. Direct Express services access to deposited money, while Social Security, Veterans Affairs, or another paying agency determines whether a benefit is issued and the amount of that payment.
Keep those roles separate.
Why some cardholders are receiving new cards
Direct Express is moving its financial-agent relationship from Comerica Bank to Fifth Third Bank. The current program FAQ says an existing Comerica-issued card remains functional until it expires and a replacement Fifth Third card is issued; cardholders are supposed to receive notice before the new card arrives.
No early replacement request is required solely because of that transition.
Continue using the current card unless Direct Express tells you otherwise. Skip unsolicited calls or messages claiming that immediate activation is required before an announced replacement has arrived.
The account selector now distinguishes cards by their starting digits. Cards beginning with 533248 and 511563 are routed through different login paths.
Check the card itself before choosing an app or website.
Request a replacement card
For the existing Direct Express system, a replacement can be requested through the website, the mobile app, or customer service. The documented mobile path is Account Details, Actions, and Request New Card. On the website, users select Actions and then Card Replacement.
The replacement request asks why a new card is needed, such as:
- Lost
- Stolen
- Damaged
A temporarily misplaced card can instead be locked through the account controls. In the mobile app, the path is Account Details, Actions, and Lock Card; the website places Lock Card under Actions.
Use the lock first only when the card is probably nearby. Report it as lost or stolen when another person may have access to it, it was retained by an ATM, or its location is unknown.
Direct Express says a permanently lost or stolen card will be deactivated and replaced after it is reported.
How long replacement delivery takes
The existing Comerica-card FAQ gives a standard-mail estimate of 7 to 10 days for a replacement card. It also lists standard delivery without a delivery charge and an expedited option carrying a $13.50 fee.
The same material allows one replacement card per year without a replacement charge. After that first replacement, the published charge is $4 per card.
These figures come from the existing-card documentation. Terms may differ for a newly issued Fifth Third card, so check the Cardholder Agreement tied to the actual card before relying on a fee or delivery estimate.
Do not count weekends as though they were guaranteed mail-delivery days. Exact arrival can also depend on the postal service and whether the address in the Direct Express account is current.
Update the address before ordering
An outdated mailing address can send a replacement card or transition notice to the wrong location.
Direct Express documents this address-update path for the existing website and app:
- Select the Profile icon.
- Choose Contact Information.
- Select the pencil control to edit the address.
Changing the address with Direct Express does not update Social Security or another federal paying agency. The card program explicitly says the recipient must notify the paying agency separately because Direct Express does not send the new address to federal agencies.
Update both records.
This is especially important during the bank transition because Direct Express may use its own mailing record for a replacement card, while the paying agency uses a separate record for benefit notices.
Does a replacement card interrupt benefits?
A replacement card changes the physical access device, not necessarily the underlying benefit entitlement.
Direct Express says existing Comerica cards remain functional until the new Fifth Third card arrives during the planned transition.
For a lost or damaged card, federal payments may continue to post to the card account while the replacement is being delivered. The practical problem is access to those funds, not whether the federal agency continues issuing the benefit.
Check transaction history through the official account system when online access remains available. Direct Express’s app can display pending and recent deposits, account balances, and transaction history.
Do not ask the paying agency to reissue a payment merely because the plastic card is unavailable. Contact the agency only when the expected federal deposit itself does not appear.
Activate the new card
Treasury says the cardholder chooses a four-digit PIN when activating a Direct Express card. That PIN is used at ATMs and PIN-based retail terminals.
Use the activation instructions supplied with the replacement card or the telephone number printed on it. The correct app and account website depend on the card series, particularly during the Fifth Third transition.
A mobile app currently listed for cards beginning with 533248 requires users to register again with their card details before their first login. The app listing specifically says it should not be used for cards beginning with 511563.
This is a registration issue, not proof that the new card is defective.
Do this first: compare the starting digits. Skip repeated activation attempts in an app that does not support the card.
What happens to the old card?
After a lost or stolen card is reported, it is deactivated. Do not use it if it is found later.
For a scheduled program transition, continue using the existing Comerica card until the replacement arrives and its instructions tell you to switch. The current Direct Express FAQ says the old card remains functional in the meantime.
Once the new card has been activated and confirmed working, destroy the old card in a way that makes its account information and chip unusable.
A replacement card may have a different number, expiration date, and security code. Those changes affect merchants that retain the previous card information.
Update recurring payments after replacement
Direct Express’s existing FAQ states that billers using the former card must receive the new card number, expiration date, and security code so recurring payments continue without interruption.
Review:
- Utility or phone bills
- Insurance payments
- Subscription services
- Online merchant accounts
- Other preauthorized card payments
Do not assume that every merchant will update automatically. A payment may fail even though the replacement card has been activated and has an available balance.
Update essential billers first. Skip deleting the old merchant record until the new payment method has been saved and confirmed by that merchant.
The replacement card does not change the federal agency’s deposit instructions. Recurring benefit payments remain a separate process.
The new card arrived, but login fails
A replacement card may require re-registration rather than the old username and password.
The correct response depends on the card series:
| Situation | First check |
|---|---|
| Old credentials fail in a new app | Confirm whether new registration is required |
| Card is rejected during registration | Verify the starting digits and selected app |
| Verification code does not arrive | Use Resend, then contact support if needed |
| Old portal still opens | Confirm whether the new card belongs to another system |
| Account was deleted online | Re-register the card |
The existing Direct Express FAQ says users who do not receive a registration verification code should select Resend. If the code still does not arrive, it directs them to customer service.
That FAQ also says deleting the website or mobile profile does not deactivate the physical card, but the card must be registered again before the user can log back in.
Do not create several profiles in quick succession. Confirm the portal and use one clean registration attempt.
Which customer-service number should you call?
Treasury advises cardholders to use the number on the back of their physical card and states that Direct Express customer service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
During the card transition, that is the most reliable route because the card itself identifies the servicing system.
The current official contact materials separate Fifth Third and Comerica cardholders. Existing Comerica support remains listed at 1-888-741-1115, while newer cards use a different servicing number published on the new Direct Express contact page and card.
Before calling, note:
- The starting digits on the card
- Whether it is lost, stolen, damaged, expired, or newly received
- The date the replacement was requested
- Whether standard or expedited delivery was selected
- The current mailing address status
- Any non-sensitive error shown during activation
Never send a PIN, password, verification code, full card number, security code, or Social Security number through an ordinary email or message.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to replace my Comerica card now?
No. Direct Express says to keep using it until the Fifth Third replacement arrives or further instructions are provided.
Can I order a replacement online?
Yes. Existing-card users can select Actions and Card Replacement on the website, or Account Details, Actions, and Request New Card in the app.
How long does standard replacement delivery take?
The existing Direct Express FAQ says 7 to 10 days.
Is expedited delivery available?
Existing-card documentation lists expedited delivery for $13.50. Confirm the fee under the agreement applying to your card.
Will my benefits stop while I wait?
The federal agency may continue depositing scheduled payments into the card account. Contact Direct Express about card access, and contact the paying agency only when the expected deposit itself is missing.
Why does the new app reject my card?
It may serve the other card series. The app for cards beginning with 533248 states that cards beginning with 511563 should not use it.
Do I need to update recurring bills?
Yes. Direct Express says billers must receive the replacement card’s new payment details so recurring charges continue.
Does changing my Direct Express address update Social Security?
No. The federal paying agency must be updated separately.
The practical order is to update both mailing records, request the replacement through the card’s own system, track the delivery window, activate the new card, and then update recurring merchants.
